Narendra Modi Chennai visit, Tamil Nadu News: Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai has come out all guns blazing against Chief Minister M K Stalin saying the ruling government staged a “political drama” last evening when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Chennai for inaugurating several projects and laying the foundation stone for fresh infrastructure projects worth over Rs 31,500 crore. Annamalai, who received PM Modi and participated in the event that took place at Nehru Indoor Stadium on Thursday, told reporters that the Prime Minister did not reach the city for a BJP function but to initiate welfare projects for the people of Tamil Nadu.
Inaugurating several completed projects and laying the foundation stone for fresh infrastructure projects worth Rs 31,500 crore here on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi listed his government’s priorities and initiatives, including those to promote Tamil language and culture. In his first visit to Chennai after the DMK government took charge last year, the Prime Minister said, “It is always wonderful to be back in Tamil Nadu. This land is special. The people, culture and language of this state are outstanding.”
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, in his address at the same event, highlighted the state’s contribution to national economy to raise a number of long-pending demands such as payment of GST dues from the Centre. He noted that in this ‘Dravidian Model’ of governance, while taking various welfare and developmental measures, he wants the PM to note that they have largely corrected the fiscal imbalance and also re-structured the finances of the state.
Tamil Nadu on Friday logged 55 new COVID-19 infections, pushing the state’s tally to 34,55,154 while the total number of fatalities remained unchanged at 38,025 till date, the health department said.
The number of people who have recuperated from the viral disease rose to 34,16,728 with 41 more people getting discharged, leaving 401 active infections, a medical bulletin said.
Chennai accounted for the majority of new cases with 35. Chengalpet recorded nine, Coimbatore and Tiruvallur clocked six, Virudhunagar recorded two while Cuddalore, Kanyakumari, and Kancheepuram recorded one case, each. (PTI)
Tamil Nadu Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan has written a letter to district collectors and the Commissioner of the Greater Chennai Corporation amid the rising Covid-19 cases in some pockets of Chennai and other neighbouring districts.
In his letter, Radhakrishnan said that apart from small institutional clusters, they are also getting few contact positives out of persons picking it up after attending functions, leading to family clusters. He said so far there has been no significant increase in hospitalisation but if the number rises, the comorbid and the elderly can start getting affected. Read More
Educational institutions should give encouragement to education in the mother tongue and schemes must be named using the Tamil language, Chief Minister M K Stalin said here on Friday.
Inaugurating a school here, Stalin appealed to the management of such private institutions to provide a boost to education in the mother tongue. Also, he said schemes formulated by schools should be named using the Tamil language.
Stalin, inaugurating a new school of the DAV Group in suburban Pallikaranai, said love for one’s mother tongue and nation is very important for each and every person.
The Chief Minister lauded the DAV school authorities for coming forward to lend a helping hand to provide education-based assistance to two government-run schools here by inking a pact. (PTI)

The Greater Chennai Police arrested four people in connection with the murder of Tamil Nadu BJP’s SC wing district secretary (Chennai central) Balachander V (33) in Chintadripet on Tuesday.
The police, in a statement on Thursday, said M Pradeep (26) and his brother M Sanjay (24) of Chintandripet, K Kalairajan (28) of Ezhil Nagar in Perumbakkam and J Jothi (30) of Chintadripet were arrested on Wednesday night in connection with the murder. The cops said they also seized a motorbike, mobile phone and three knives. Read more
Tamil Nadu on Thursday added 59 more Covid-19 cases, pushing the state’s caseload to 34,55,099 till date while the death toll remain unchanged at 38,025 with nil fatalities, the health department said. The number of people who have recuperated from the viral disease rose to 34,16,687 with 43 more people getting discharged in the last 24 hours.
Tamil Nadu currently has 387 active infections, a medical bulletin said. Among the new cases, 34 were men and 25 women. Chennai accounted for the majority of new cases with 33, Chengalpet 15, Kancheepuram five, Coimbatore three, Tiruvallur two while Krishnagiri recorded one. (PTI)

On the importance of infrastructure projects, PM Modi said, “History has taught us that those nations which gave topmost importance to infrastructure made the transition from developing to developed countries… The Government of India is fully focused on building infrastructure that is top quality and sustainable.”
Modi also said the Centre is committed to further popularise Tamil language and culture. Praising Tamil language as “eternal” and Tamil culture as “global”, he said, “From Chennai to Canada, from Madurai to Malaysia, from Namakkal to New York, from Salem to South Africa, occasions of Pongal and Puthandu are marked with great fervour.”
Days after a 23-year-old techie died after taking part in an illegal party at a mall in Chennai’s Anna Nagar, the police have arrested three more men for organising the event without prior police permission. All six accused have been remanded to judicial custody.
According to the police, based on a tip off on May 21, the Anna Nagar Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) reached the mall and found a party, ‘Great Indian Gathering’, being organised without police permission. During the raid, police said they found that liquor was served to those partying at Monkey Bar, through the adjacent Madras Bar, without requisite licences. The police seized 844 bottles of liquor. Days after controversy was triggered when a prominent Tamil magazine and two media personalities were booked in an alleged blackmail and extortion case, Chennai police on Thursday issued a statement saying that their names would be removed from the FIR. Moreover, a senior police officer was shifted from his post in connection with the same issue.
Biweekly magazine Junior Vikatan, vigilance officer-turned-whistleblower Savukku Shankar and controversial YouTuber Maridhass were among the names added to an FIR filed on the basis of a complaint by a real estate firm, G Square Realtors, regarding alleged threats and blackmailing it faced from January 2022. Nirdeshak, the second survey vessel of the Indian Navy, was launched at L&T Kattupalli near here on Thursday. The vessel was launched by Sarbani Dasgupta, wife of Vice Admiral Biswajit Dasgupta, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Naval Command.
Nirdeshak is the second survey vessel to be launched while the remaining two are to be delivered in 2023 and 2024. All four survey vessel (large) ships will enhance the hydrographic and oceanographic survey capabilities of the Indian Navy, an official release said.
The 110 metre long ships have a displacement of about 3,400 tonnes and will be equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic equipment. Nirdeshak’s launch is another milestone in indigenous shipbuilding, upholding the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the release said. (PTI)
