CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) – High School students from Casper, Cheyenne, Buffalo, Basin and Cody worked on a business idea for three weeks then presented it to a panel of judges.
Bryce Hebert, an Natrona County High School Junior, said his business idea came from his passion for music. “I’ve played since fifth grade and I’ve loved it,” Hebert said. Judges gave him feedback about his business and gave ways to improve. “The judges said they were concerned about the sustainability because it’s expected since it’s focused on merchandise. It’s definitely one of the things to check out and build up more,” Hebert said.
Haley Adkins, a Kelly Walsh High School senior, said she pitched a clothing business idea. “I want to bring in clothing from wholesale places, but we are going to change them so it’s unique like adding embroidery, screen printing and sewing,” Adkins said.
Judges suggested Adkins have her business be online and have pop-up shops occasionally. Adkins adds there was a lot more to setting up a business than expected. “The business plan we had to present I had no idea how time consuming it was,” Adkins said.
Hebert received $1,000 of seed money to start up his business one day. Adkins received $5,000 start-up money and $3,000 for marketing. This experience is called Be Entreprenual from Impact Wyoming, a non-profit working to get Wyoming youth to contribute to the business development of their community.
Both of these Casper high schoolers are grateful for the experience and want to run businesses in the future. “I think without [Be Entreprenual] I would have been out of high school so lost and now I think I know what I’m getting into,” Adkins said.
“I want to make a name for myself and provide a service that hasn’t been perfected yet,” Hebert said.
Impact Wyoming is having another Be Entrepreneurial program in the fall and the spring.
