Nottingham is known for many things – Robin Hood, the lace industry and, of course, Forest, who have just gained promotion to football’s Premier League for the first time in 23 years.
Think of cricket, though, and the first thing that is likely to spring to most people’s minds is Stuart Broad’s epic haul of eight for 15 against Australia at Trent Bridge in 2015, a performance that powered England towards their last Ashes series victory.
It’s hard to believe that was actually the last time England had success at this famous old ground, with two defeats and a draw from three Tests played here since.
However, Broad and the rest of an unchanged XI confirmed on the eve of this second Test against New Zealand will, after last week’s dramatic win at Lord’s, have the opportunity to seal England’s first Test series win in 18 months when the second instalment of this three-match series starts on Friday.
Not since a 2-0 victory in Sri Lanka in January 2021 have England managed that, with five barren series chalked up in succession.
But the winds of change that swept through Lord’s last week, with new coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes getting off to the perfect start, means England can finally look to the future with optimism.
Broad, 36 later this month, has stated that his new mindset since being dropped for the tour of the Caribbean in March is to not look too far ahead. Yet if he did, he would realise that with no Ashes Test scheduled for Nottingham next summer, this could very well be his last Test at Trent Bridge.
Coming off the back of Broad’s match-changing spell at Lord’s that set up a team hat-trick in New Zealand’s second innings last Saturday, the scene is surely set for one last hurrah at his home ground.
Broad whipped up the normally genteel Lord’s crowd before his decisive spell last weekend but Stokes doesn’t believe he’ll need to do the same in Nottingham, where he memorably took a hat-trick for real against India in 2011.
“Over his career he has just gone on those mad runs,” said Stokes. “He’s had amazing spells. He’s had amazing overs where he’s completely changed the look of the game. And that was another one to add to Broady’s collection.
“We were actually talking if that happened here, I think that would have been Trent Bridge rocking for about 45 minutes but Lord’s soon calmed down again, unfortunately.
“You just have the sense with Stu sometimes, he’s going to do something on a day or he just felt on and he just said he is going to get the crowd going.”
The bad news for New Zealand is James Anderson, England’s all-time leading wicket-taker who was also snubbed for that tour of the West Indies, has a better record than Broad at this ground.
England: AZ Lees, Z Crawley, OJD Pope, JE Root, JM Bairstow, BA Stokes (captain), BT Foakes (wicketkeeper), MJ Potts, MJ Leach, SCJ Broad, JM Anderson.
New Zealand (probable): TWM Latham (captain), WA Young, DP Conway, HM Nicholls, DJ Mitchell, TA Blundell (wicketkeeper), M Bracewell, KA Jamieson, TG Southee, MJ Henry, TA Boult.
Umpires: P Reiffel (Australia), M Gough (England).
TV umpire: R Tucker (Australia).
Match referee: R Richardson (West Indies).
Pitch: Green tinge, meaning good for seamers but dry weather may bring spin into equation.
Weather: 22 degrees, sunny with cloud
Indeed, although not statistically his best venue – Anderson has more wickets at Lord’s – the 39-year-old’s record in Nottingham is imposing, with 68 wickets at 19.44 in 11 matches.
Just as last week, Anderson, Broad and Matt Potts, who shone on his debut, will provide a consistent threat to New Zealand’s batters, who are already weakened by the absence of Kane Williamson, who pulled out of the squad on the eve of the Test with Covid.
England know, though, their own batting line-up also needs to fire. Joe Root, unburdened by giving up the captaincy, also played a major role in that 2015 success against Australia at Trent Bridge, with his 130 that set up an innings win his last century in Ashes cricket.
However, after scoring a match-winning unbeaten fourth-innings hundred just last week at Lord’s, Stokes is expecting more here.
“Joe, without that added pressure of being captain, it was almost like he was 18 again,” he said. “One thing Joe always does is score runs. It’s great he doesn’t have that mountain of added pressure of being captain on his shoulders, he can just go out there and score the runs like he does.”
Back in the summer of 2017 after England had been hammered by South Africa at Lord’s in an ODI having been reduced to 20 for six, former coach Trevor Bayliss famously said: “We weren’t positive enough.”
England’s renaissance in white-ball cricket was built on an ultra-aggressive approach that occasionally fell flat – that match at Lord’s, the 2017 Champions Trophy semi-final against Pakistan in Cardiff when they were bowled out for 211 and an ODI in St Lucia in 2019 when they were routed for 113 by the West Indies.
Yet the ultimate goal – winning the 2019 World Cup – was attained with a consistently attacking approach where enjoyment and freedom were at the centre of the team’s philosophy.
It’s an approach that has now been adopted in Test cricket under the guidance of new coach Brendon McCullum, a close friend of England’s ODI and T20 captain Eoin Morgan. The New Zealand team McCullum captained set the template for England’s later success in white-ball cricket.
No surprise then that captain Ben Stokes, on the eve of this second Test against New Zealand in Nottingham, spoke effusively about “enjoyment” and embracing even higher levels of positivity than what was seen in the new regime’s opening win at Lord’s last week.
“The message from me to everyone is to just look to be even more positive,” said Stokes. “Let’s just always look to try and be better. It’s something I learned in the way Morgs captained the one-day team – he was always looking to be more positive in defeat or in victory.
“It’s just a simple message and it’s something we are trying to filter throughout everything we do. Always look to be positive.”
With such an approach comes the risk of messing things up. It happened occasionally with the one-day team and Stokes admitted it will likely happen during this latest red-ball “reset”.
“It’s going to be a long road with the way we’ve changed our mindset and the way we want to play the game,” he said. “I know there’s going to be some ups and downs. Obviously we’re on a big up after winning last week, but we’re just going to try and take everything as it comes. Because who knows what this week will have in store for us?”
That was always part of the fun of watching the one-day renaissance. This Test team are promising to be just the same.
