The first 2022 iPhone details have already started to leak, but millions of current iPhone owners need to pay attention to Apple’s new warning first.

Picked up by 9to5Mac, Apple has quietly confirmed that all iPhone 13 models are currently affected by a bizarre audio problem. Moreover, users have been waiting months for a fix.
The problem concerns noise cancellation with all iPhone 13 owners currently missing this feature for phone calls. The problem initially gained attention after a Reddit thread went viral.
“iPhone 12 lineup and lower have a front mic that is used for noise cancellation. The setting can be found in Accessibility -> Audio/Visual. iPhone 13 doesn’t have it. No noise cancellation at all,” explained the initial reddit poster. “It’s a PHONE! Making phone calls is THE basic function. At first, I thought my device was faulty, but it seems like Apple removed this feature on purpose for whatever reason. Tried multiple other phones in an Apple store. Even the Genius Bar employee was surprised. He wasn’t aware the noise cancellation feature was gone on iPhone 13.”
“Apple support confirmed that Apple engineers are working on it. Though, they couldn’t tell yet whether it’s a software or a hardware issue,” the poster continued. “Currently no ETA.” Others replying to the post also confirmed that Apple Support is acknowledging the issue to them.

Encouragingly, some detective work from Reddit user clutchtow using Xcode confirmed the iPhone 13 series does still have the same four microphones as the iPhone 12 series (“2 on the bottom, 1 rear near the cameras, and one front in the speaker grill”) so a potential fix could be found in software as long as it isn’t a fundamental manufacturing defect.
Also noted above, to check the fault for yourself on your iPhone 13 navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual. Whereas earlier iPhone models offer a ‘Phone Noise Cancellation’ option between ‘Mono Audio’ and ‘Headphone Notifications’, all iPhone 13 models do not.
I have asked Apple for a statement on this issue and the timeframe for a fix. I will update this post when/if I receive a reply.
