TAMPA — Yankees utility player Miguel Andujar is OK after he was reportedly robbed at gunpoint and beaten Wednesday, manager Aaron Boone said.
Boone said he spoke to Andujar on Sunday morning, the report day for big-leaguers to spring training at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
“He was good,” Boone told reporters at a press conference. “Obviously, very scary, I asked him right away how his corazon was. Look great and he seemed good. Obviously a scary situation and something that we’ll continue to talk to him (about). Obviously support him as he needs. But this morning he seemed good and ready to go and looks great.”
A report from Listin Diario said that gunmen robbed and beat Andujar at his farm in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic.
The alleged assailants took a $7,000 watch from Andujar, and stole his father’s SUV, which was later recovered abandoned, according the report. Shots were fired, but Andujar wasn’t hit, a report said.
Boone said he expects that Andujar will be ready soon to begin workouts.
“But, again, I’d rather let him get through his physical and see where we’re at with all that,” the manager said.
Andujar was spotted in Tampa on Saturday. Yankees were expected to report to spring training Sunday and formal team workouts were scheduled for Monday. Yankees minor-leaguers have been working out for weeks at the player development complex across the street from George M. Steinbrenner Field. The Yankees were in contact with Andujar after the alleged incident.
Andujar was the American League Rookie of the Year runner-up in 2018, finishing just behind Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels. That season, Andujar took over as starting third baseman and hit .297 with 27 homers, 92 RBI and a .855 OPS in 149 games.
Over parts of five major-league seasons, Andujar has a .253 batting average, 34 home runs, 114 RBI and a .778 OPS in 232 games, all with the Yankees.
