Brittney Griner’s detention period in Russia has been extended until May 19, Russian news agency TASS announced on Thursday.
TASS reported that the Khimki City Court of the Moscow region ruled to detain Griner for at least two more months. The 31-year-old American basketball star was initially detained after Russian customs officials allegedly found vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage at an airport near Moscow in February.
ESPN investigative reporter T.J. Quinn provided an update after these reports surfaced on Thursday.
“Brittney Griner news: What does this mean? Not much; experts said last week this is what they expected. She was due to get a trial date, but prosecutors asked for and got more time to investigate. There was no way she was suddenly being released today,” he wrote on Twitter.

Quinn has been walking the fine line of reporting on this concerning situation for quite some time.
“There have been a lot of stories asking why Griner’s predicament isn’t a bigger deal and pointing out the inequities between men’s and women’s sports. The people around her say those are great points, but… not right now. Every time the heat gets turned up, they cringe,” he said earlier this week.
