The organizer of last year’s “Take One, Leave One” egg hunt throughout Franklin County said the event was so popular she is appealing to area businesses willing to provide a shuttle service on April 9 to make it accessible to people without a vehicle.
Turners Falls resident Christina Forde initially came up with a Valentine’s Day version of this idea after her daughter was disappointed to learn there would be no card exchange in school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But she recalls having this light-bulb moment too close to Feb. 14, and the plan failed to gain much traction. So she tweaked the idea and decided to organize a free Easter egg hunt for the entire county.
“Actually, it went really well. We had, I think in the end, about 50 addresses on the map, maybe even more,” Forde said of last year’s participation. “We had quite a bit of kids. … I got photos and videos of happy and smiling children, so that was heart-warming, of course.”
Designated residencies and businesses place plastic eggs filled with goodies in a basket or hidden around the front of the property. Egg hunters can visit the addresses on the map and take one egg — they are encouraged to replace it with one, though that is not required. Eggs can be filled with items such as a friendly note, stickers, temporary tattoos and candy, though participants are asked to be mindful of potential allergies.
Forde said this year’s event is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 9. There is a rain date of April 30.
“All of Franklin County is invited,” Forde said.
Last year consisted of stops in Greenfield, Turners Falls, Sunderland, Whately, Northfield and Orange.
“With this, I kind of figured it would keep people far enough from each other, but still give the pleasure of finding eggs,” Forde said.
Montague mother Heather George said she and her daughter Alissa Battistoni, now 7, participated last year after George read about the event on the “Greenfield, MA Moms” Facebook page.
“It went great last year,” she said. “It’s amazing what a group of moms can do.”
George said her daughter loved searching through people’s yards for plastic eggs, visiting at least 10 houses. They also left eggs on their property on Turners Falls Road in Montague and plan to do the same this year. She said she wants “things to be semi-normal for kids these days.”
