Beijing China: Beijing: The United States is at risk of paying an “unbearable cost” because of its actions regarding Taiwan, Wang Yi, state councilor and foreign minister, stated in an interview with state media on Thursday.
China has claimed that it has a democratically-governed Taiwan as its territory. In the past two years, it has increased diplomatic and military pressure to assert its sovereignty and provoked tensions in Taipei and concern in Washington.
China-Taiwan Conflict: Taiwan has emerged as key factor in strained relations between China and US.
Through “encouraging Taiwan’s independence,” The United States “not only puts Taiwan in a perilous condition but also reveals the United States to an unbearable cost,” Wang said.
Taiwan has been identified as one of the main factors in the tensions in relationships among China with China and the United States, the island’s biggest international backer and arms provider, despite the absence of official diplomatic ties.
Taiwan declares it is an independent nation and pledges to protect its democracy and freedom. China often refers to the island as one of the most sensitive issues regarding its relations between China, Taiwan, and the United States.
“Taiwan is stuck with no alternative to pursuing other than reunification with mainland China,” said Wang.
Although the United States indeed recognizes only one China, it is obliged legally to supply Taiwan with the tools to defend itself. Taiwan has been a long-standing follower of the policy of “strategic unclearness” regarding whether or not it will intervene militarily to defend Taiwan in the scenario of the possibility of a Chinese attack.
